I have chosen the above scroll of projects to describe attentions to specific client needs in varied architectural styles and climates. It is my feeling that the role of the architect is to create a built physical representation for client's dreams, and to provide creative capabilities to add magic.
House on Elbow Cay, Bahamas
Hurricane Dorian 2019 made landfall a category 5, sustained winds of 185 mph and
gusts to 220 mph. The eye of the Hurricane made landfall and traveled directly over the barrier island of Elbow Cay. All of the island was terribly impacted with most homes sustaining catastrophic damage. The white oak timberframe and stainless steel home I designed and engineered in 1997 survived with minimal structural damage. This was the third major hurricane to hit the house and Dorian was the most powerful Atlantic hurricane ever recorded. The house was designed to maintain the equivalent strength of holding a 747 on the ground at full takeoff lift. In this new reality of climate change, I believe strongly in designing for resilience, whether hurricanes, fires, seismic, and others.
