House on Elbow Cay, Bahamas

A masonry and white oak timberframe house built like a finely crafted boat on Elbow Cay, Abaco, Bahamas in 1997. The timberframe was constructed in Northern Michigan by StrongTimbers in a large pole barn in the dead of winter, then disassembled and shipped to the island via container.  The foundation of concrete was constructed simultaneously by the Albury family of boatbuilders to astonishingly accurate specifications and included a 30,000 gallon freshwater cistern.  A pleasant home, large by island standards, has a wrap around porch and roof deck and other amenities and has served the owners well for many years.  Recognizing the island history, we designed the home for 100 year storms; it has since been hit by three 100 year storms!

The house weathered with ease a direct hit from Hurricane Floyd 1999, near Cat 5 with sustained winds of 154 mph and gusts to 185 mph;  9/1/2019 Elbow Cay was hit again as Hurricane Dorian 2019 made landfall a very powerful Cat 5, sustained winds of 185 mph and gusts to 220 mph.  The eye of the Hurricane traveled directly over the island.  The island of Elbow Cay, as with all of Abaco were terribly impacted with most homes sustaining catastrophic damage.  The house we designed survived admirably.  All photos withheld out of privacy and at Owners request.
